about

I am only uploading this because of ONE track which gives context for the upcoming debut Dream Library album(!!).

This EP was 100% a disaster from a production standpoint though I will stand by some of the tracks from a music perspective. Honestly if you had asked me in 2020 what I thought of Synth Thing I would have been slightly concerned you knew that it existed, and would then promptly deny that it was ever released. It was during the latter half of the production of the debut Dream Library album I remembered the existence of the track Fractured, and decided to remake it from the ground up in a slower, more retro style. Now in 2022 I've realised most of this album really wasn't terrible from a composition standpoint, to the point that I'm willing to reupload it for historical preservation or whatever (my favourites are Fractured (in case that wasnt already obvious) and Depth).

To mitigate the disaster I have redone roughly half of the EP's production, from the instruments themselves, to the awful mixing (or lack thereof). I also mastered it properly this time, instead of just slapping the loudest multiband dynamics preset i could find on the master bus for every track.

This description is already an essay so I think I will talk about the EP as a whole now. About 1/3 of it was made using Caustic 3, a mobile app which basically simulates a set of rackmount studio gear from synths to effects to a mixing board to a sequencer. Originally three of the tracks were made using Caustic, they were Stabs, Depth and Synth Thing. They definitely have the most "raw" production out of all the tracks on this EP due to the fact that I hadn't yet realised I could export stems for proper mixing in Studio One, something I DID realise later on for an unreleased album that was also made with Caustic. The rest of the tracks were made shortly after I purchased an upgrade to Studio One 3 Professional, with all the instruments that come with it. This mostly shows through the orchestral sounds. While making this remaster type thing I was very tempted to rip out the old Studio One orchestral sounds and replace them with EastWest's far superior Symphonic Orchestra sample library, but I decided the Studio One orchestra sounds were part of the EP's feel and kept them.
